Network Computing

Network Computing editors invited 35 vendors of spam-filtering products to evaluate on architecture, management, end-user control, security and price, among other attributes. Of the 35 vendors invited, they tested products from 27, got usable results from 23, and include the Top 10 in this review. Barracuda Networks and the Barracuda Spam Firewall won the top pick. This is what they had to say ...

"Barracuda's was one of the easiest products to get running and administer. We simply logged on to the console and ran through a wizard to set initial IP information, then connected to the device through the Web interface to fine-tune the settings for our test. We set spam and virus definitions to update automatically every hour, but this configuration can be changed to suit your needs.

Once the accuracy test was finished, we disabled our default configuration for tagging and forwarding spam, activated antivirus scanning, and set up the built-in spam quarantine to send digests to users on a daily basis. We also set the spam-scoring thresholds to tag possible spam, quarantine likely spam, and delete definite spam. This took all of three minutes and didn't require a peek at the manual or a call to tech support.

Our tests convinced us that you don't even need an IT department to manage the Barracuda Spam Firewall. Barracuda's sales are mainly to SMBs because of low cost and ease of use, but Spam Firewall is also a favorite of large ISPs and higher education users because it is licensed per box rather than per user.

Spam Firewall has a feature called the Exchange Accelerator; this is an LDAP lookup that will work with any LDAP server. The Accelerator protects your mail server from dictionary attacks by using an LDAP query to check that the recipient of a new message has a mailbox on the mail server. If the LDAP query doesn't return a result, the appliance generates an NDR (nondelivery report) and returns the mail to the sender without wasting cycles on your mail server.

We easily set our own blacklists and whitelists. Also, when we deleted an entry from our spam digest, that message was used to train the Bayesian database to help increase accuracy. Barracuda told us that the product's next release, which should be available by the time you read this, will include user-settable quarantine thresholds."
